NEWS CENTER – The Kurdish Women’s Movement in Europe (TJK-E) has called on women worldwide to raise their voices against the reinstated death sentence of Iranian Kurdish activist Sharife Mohammadi, urging global solidarity under the slogan “Stand up and say NO.”
Sharife Mohammadi was arrested in 2023 for participating in protests sparked by the 2022 killing of Jîna Emînî by Iran's morality police. Although her death sentence was overturned in October 2024, Iran’s Supreme Court recently reinstated the ruling, drawing sharp criticism from human rights groups and activists.
In a statement released after the court's latest decision, TJK-E condemned the Iranian regime’s ongoing repression of women and civil society. “Following the killing of Jîna Emînî on September 16, 2022, massive protests erupted across Iran, led by Kurdish women. The slogan ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ became a global symbol of women's resistance and defiance against the regime,” the organization said.
TJK-E warned that Iran is using executions to silence dissent: “The regime continues to sentence women to death in order to maintain its grip on power and intimidate the public. These rulings are part of a broader campaign to suppress freedom and instill fear.”
The statement described the renewed death sentence as “an act of revenge against women and the people,” emphasizing that Mohammadi is being punished for her trade union activism and defense of women’s and workers’ rights.
“The charges in her case reflect a deeply patriarchal and politicized judiciary. We reject this ruling and call on international institutions to intervene immediately. Wherever women are oppressed, we will be their voice,” the statement declared.
TJK-E concluded by calling for global resistance: “The freedom of Sharife Mohammadi is the freedom of all women. We urge every woman around the world to raise her voice and say ‘STOP’ to this injustice.”
