One thousand 249 violations in 17 prisons in 3 months

ISTANBUL - IHD Istanbul Branch announced that one thousand 249 violations committed in 17 prisons in 3 months and 500 of these violations were torture and ill-treatment. 

Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul Branch Prison Commission announced the 3-month report on "Rights Violations in Prisons in Marmara Region" at the office of the association. The report covering the months of January, March and April includes violations in 17 prisons, 7 of which are in Marmara Region. It was noted that 36 violations were applied and 4 of the applicants were women and 32 of them were men. It was also stated that 31 of the applicants were political prisoners.
 
The prisons covered by the report are as follows: Marmara (Silivri) Prison, Çorlu Karatepe Prison, Kandıra F-Type Prisons No 1 and 2, Tekirdağ F-Type Prisons No 1 and 2, Metris R-Type Prison, Bakırköy Women's Closed Prison, Silivri Open Prison, Bodrum S-Type Prison, Bafra T-Type Prison, İzmir Aliağa Women's Prison, İzmir Kırıklar F-Type Prison, Artvin Prison, Kahramanmaraş Türkoğlu L-Type Prison, Sincan F-Type Prison, Kırşehir High Security Prison.
 
IHD Prison Commission member Semiray Yılmaz Bilgin stated that one thousand 249 violations occurred in 3 months as a result of applications and press surveys. Semiray Yılmaz Bilgin said, "A total of 852 violations, 355 in January, 438 in February and 59 in March, were detected in prisons in Marmara Region. In the applications received from prisons outside the Marmara Region; a total of 89 violations detected, 22 in January, 54 in February and 13 in March."
 
Semiray Yılmaz Bilgin stated that 941 violations were included in the applications received and 308 violations were detected through the press. Noting that the total number of violations was one thousand, Semiray Yılmaz Bilgin said, "Violations of the right to nutrition and access to basic needs 49, violations of the right to communication and isolation 140, violations of access to justice 26, violations of the right to health 132, violations of the principle of equality in execution 90, violations of the right to life 4, violations of torture and ill-treatment 500."
 
IHD Istanbul Branch Chair Gülseren Yoleri said that the authorities did not take any steps against the violations and call on the authorities to fulfill their responsibilities and to prisoners and their relatives to apply to their association.
